EFI diagnosis and tuning

For the car that starts and drives, but never quite feels right.

Service One Automotive diagnoses electronic fuel injection faults at Factory 9, 266 Osborne Avenue, Clayton South VIC 3169. EFI work covers rough idling, hesitation, hard starting, poor fuel economy and drivability complaints, by testing what the injection system is actually doing rather than replacing parts in turn. Ring or text 0434 949 091. Please call to confirm current weekday hours.

The fault with no warning light

Plenty of injection problems never set a light. The car starts, it drives, it gets you there, and it is just not right. A hesitation pulling out of a side street. A rough thirty seconds on a cold morning. Fuel economy that has quietly got worse.

There is nothing to read with a scan tool on a car like that, which is why it so often gets shrugged at. It is still a fault, and it is still findable.

What is actually being measured

Fuel injection is a balancing act between how much air is getting in, how much fuel is going in with it, and what the exhaust says about the result. Every one of those is a number that can be watched while the engine runs.

Fuel pressure under load rather than at idle. Injector behaviour. What the air flow and oxygen sensors are reporting, and whether the computer is having to compensate for something. Ignition, because a misfire and a fuelling fault feel similar from the driver's seat and are not the same problem.

Why the parts cannon misses

Replacing the sensor a code names, then the next part, then the next, is a common way to spend several hundred dollars and still have the fault. The reading is usually a symptom of something upstream.

A lean reading can be a split intake hose. A dead injector can be a wiring fault rather than the injector. Testing tells you which, and it is almost always cheaper than guessing twice.

Bring it in for EFI work if

  • It idles roughly, hunts, or stalls when you come to a stop
  • There is a flat spot or a hesitation when you accelerate
  • It is hard to start cold, hard to start hot, or both
  • Fuel economy has dropped without a change in how you drive
  • It has failed an emissions check with no obvious mechanical fault
  • The engine light comes and goes and nobody has found why

Questions about efi diagnosis and tuning

How is this different to plain diagnostics?

Diagnostics starts from a stored fault code. EFI work starts from how the car drives, which matters because the most annoying injection faults never set a code at all. In practice the two overlap and you do not need to decide which one you want.

Do you do performance tuning or ECU remapping?

Ask when you ring and we will tell you straight.

My car runs fine but uses more fuel than it used to. Is that worth looking at?

Yes. Economy is one of the earliest things to slip when the fuelling is slightly off, and it is often the only symptom for a long time.
