What a scan tool actually tells you
A code like P0171 does not mean a part has failed. It means the engine computer has noticed the fuel mixture sitting lean and has given up compensating. That can be a leaking intake hose, a tired sensor, a weak fuel pump or an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor.
Replacing the part named in the code and hoping is how people end up paying twice. The scan is step one. The testing is the job.
Live data is where faults hide
Most of the useful work happens watching live data while the engine runs and while the car is driven. Sensor values that look fine at idle go wrong under load. A misfire that never appears in the workshop shows up on a cold start in Osborne Avenue.
So for an intermittent fault we will often want the car for longer than you expect, and we will ask you exactly when it happens. Cold or warm. Accelerating or coasting. First thing in the morning or after an hour. Those details save real money.

Questions about car diagnostics
My check engine light is on but the car drives fine. Can I ignore it?
A steady light means the computer has logged a fault worth looking at. A flashing one means stop driving, because a flashing engine light usually signals a misfire that can destroy the catalytic converter within minutes.
I already had the code read at a parts shop. Does that help?
Yes, bring the code with you. It saves a step. It does not replace the testing, but knowing what the car reported last week is genuinely useful.
Can you clear the light so I can sell the car?
We can clear a code once the fault behind it is fixed. Clearing a live fault so it reappears for the next owner is not something we will do.
Do you charge for diagnostics?
Diagnosis takes time and equipment, so it is quoted like any other work rather than thrown in. Ask on the phone and you will have the figure before you commit to anything.
